Question:
Can anyone be interred in your cemeteries?
Answer: No. In 1996 the Parish Council made a resolution to only inter residents who live within the Parish of Stratton St Margaret at time of death. This decision was made because there were quite a large number of people wishing to be interred into the Cemetery from outside the Parish and it was anticipated that the cemetery would have been full within 10 - 15 years. Also the upkeep and maintenance of the cemeteries are paid for by the current residents through the parish precept.
Question:
Can I buy a plot in your cemetery?
Answer: Yes. You have to be a resident of Stratton St Margaret Parish at the time of purchase and your name has to be on the electoral register. Due to the lack of space only one interment plot or cremated remains plot can be purchased per household and the names of the persons to be interred must be included on the pre-purchase form.
Only Cremated Remains plots are available at Green Road Cemetery.
Question:
Whose responsibility is it to maintain the grave once an interment has taken place ?
Answer: The Grant Holder is responsible for the maintenance of the Headstone or Desk tablet. Maintenance of the cemeteries is undertaken by the Councils groundstaff to an extremely high standard. The groundstaff will ensure that the earth on a full interment plot is kept to a maintainable level and if any problem occurs with the headstone or desktop the Council will inform the Grant Holder direct.
Question:
Can you recommend a memorial mason?
Answer: The Parish Council do not recommend memorial masons but we do have a list of masons who have agreed to fix any memorial to a recognised standard and guarantee their work for 10 years. This list is available to download under "Memorial Masons".
Question:
How many interments of cremated remains can a plot hold ?
Answer: A standard cremated remains plot will hold between 3/4 ashes dependant on the size of the casket. The standard issue from the Crematorium will allow 3 interments. Larger caskets will allow two. Please speak to the Office for clarification.
Question:
If I am eligable for purchasing a plot at your cemetery can I choose it ?
Answer: If you wish to choose a cremated remains plot you may. However, we do not allow choice when it comes to full interment plots. It will be the next avaialble plot, which the grounds manager or office staff will advise.
Question:
Can I plant a tree or shrub in memory of a loved one in your cemetery ?
Answer: The Council do allow memorial Rose trees and minature roses. Unfortunately, we no longer have any space for Trees. Please contact the Council Office if you would like to discuss this further.
Question:
Can I have an Headstone erected on my families grave?
Answer: Yes, we do allow headstones or desk tablets (cremated remains) however you must be the grant holder of the grave for permission to be granted to erect a headstone. The Parish Council operates a Memorial Masons Registration Scheme and a list of masons who are registered can be downloaded from the Memorial Masons page. There are also guidelines for the type, size and wording which we allow.
