Steps to Health

What is 'Steps to Health'?

Steps to Health is a partnership between Local Councils and the NHS. It promotes better health through physical activity.  If your GP believes physical activity will help with any medical condition you may have, he/she may refer you to the Steps to Health Scheme.

Why might I be referred?

If your doctor feels you will benefit from the health improvements listed below, you may be referred to the scheme.  You will work with a specialist to safely improve your health over a twelve-week programme.

Being more active can :

  • Reduce the risk of heart disease
  • Reduce the risk of osteoparosis
  • Control body weight
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Increase energy
  • Improve stamina
  • Improve strength and tone muscles
  • Improve shape and appearance
  • Improve confidence
  • Improve posture
  • Reduce stress

What Happens next?

If you are referred to the Steps to Health Scheme, this is what will happen once you have recieved your prescription from your GP.

Step One
You will phone or visit a participating leisure center to make an appointment to see the STEPS TO HEALTH CONSULTANT.

Step Two
During the initial appointment the STEPS TO HEALTH CONSULTANT will discuss with you your past medical history, present condition and what you would like to achieve.  You may bring a friend with you if you wish.

Step Three
Your current health and fitness levels will be assessed with your approval.  Basic measurements of body dimensions, lung efficiency and exercise response may be taken to inform the STEPS TO HEALTH CONSULTANT where you begin your programme.  The information will be used to measure your progress later on.

Step Four
The STEPS TO HEALTH CONSULTANT will then discuss with you the activities available to you within the leisure facility and if necessary will induct you in the use of the Fitness Suite gym equipment.

Step Five
The activity/exercise programme will be designed for you and if necessary you will be introduced to the instructor leading the activity you will be attending.  Once you have completed the initial appointment you may use the listed activities as advised.

Step Six
An update appointment will be made for you to meet the STEPS TO HEALTH CONSULTANT to discuss your programme after 4 weeks.  It is possible that you may wish to change your programme of activity and this is the ideal opportunity for you to discuss this with the STEPS TO HEALTH CONSULTANT.

Step Seven
After 12 weeks your progress/results to date will be assessed with a report given to your Doctor to help you decide your next plan of action.

What do I wear whilst exercising?

Wear something comfortable, with a few layers that you can take off if you get too hot; for example a T-shirt and shorts, tracksuit or leggings.

Sensible, well-fitting footwear is the most important item you will need.  Ideally, the footwear should be a pair of training shoes or flat rubber soled shoes.

Exercise Hints

  • Start slowly and build up gradually
  • Encourage a friend or partner to exercise with you
  • Have fun and enjoy yourself
  • Stay within parameters set by the instructor - they will set you realistic goals

Little and often is better than no exercise at all.
